Squatters taking over school

Kumasi, Nov 01, GNA – The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Amakom Metropolitan Assembly Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Kumasi has expressed concern about the springing up of unauthorized structures and the appearance of squatters on the school compound. These developments, the PTA said, were hampering effective teaching and learning, as they have become a complete nuisance to the school.

The association has therefore petitioned the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to expedite action on a petition it sent to the assembly to eject the squatters.

Mr John Attah-Boateng, chairman of the association who raised the issues at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 24-seater water closet toilet for the school on Sunday, said the ejection of the squatters would enable the school to have adequate land to carry out development projects and also avoid confrontation between the school authorities and the squatters.

The Amakom branch of the Christ Apostolic Church International is funding the project at the cost of about 540 million cedis. Mr Kwaku Addai-Acheampong, assemblyman for Amakom, cautioned residents to desist from the haphazard dumping of refuse.

Whilst commending the church for standing up to its social responsibilities, the assemblyman called for more of such assistance. The Reverend Samuel Mireku, pastor in-charge of the Amakom branch of the church, expressed the hope that the facility would enhance sanitation in the school.
