Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has confirmed that the government is working to settle outstanding bonuses owed to the Black Queens following their impressive performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The national women’s team earned a bronze medal, defeating South Africa on penalties in July to finish third, Ghana’s best WAFCON result in over a decade.
However, despite their success, the players have still not received all their bonuses, sparking growing concern as they prepare for a crucial 2026 WAFCON Qualifier against Egypt later this month.
“Their last bonus has not been paid, not all their bonuses,” Minister Kofi Adams admitted in an interview with Joy News.
“It’s in the process of being worked on. They are not the only ones. Even the U-20 boys have not received their package.”
The delay has prompted criticism from football stakeholders and fans who believe the Queens deserve swift recognition and support, especially after delivering a podium finish on the continental stage.
Despite the concerns, the Minister insists the issue is being handled and that the government remains committed to honouring all obligations to national teams.
The Black Queens, led by head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, are set to face Egypt in the final round of qualifiers later this month. Qualification would not only secure their place at the 2026 WAFCON, but also move them a step closer to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as the tournament doubles as a qualifier.
With morale and preparation key, many believe resolving the bonus issue swiftly will give the team the motivation they need ahead of the decisive clash.
As the countdown to the qualifier continues, fans are hoping the Queens will get both the financial reward they deserve and the support they need to reach the global stage once again.
