Spirit of volunteerism was rekindled by the 31st December revolution.

Ashaiman, Jan. 5, GNA – Mr Jonathan Abayah, Secretary of the Association of Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (ACDR), said on Sunday that the spirit of volunteerism was rekindled during the 31st December Revolution launched by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings. That was the period when students from the universities and secondary schools, workers, farmers, fishermen and civil servants joined forces together to carry cocoa, cleared choked gutters and performed other patriotic jobs.

Mr Abayah, who was speaking at a lecture on the 22nd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution organised by the ACDR at Ashaiman, noted that armed robbers and other known criminals had to flee and that made people to walk freely without any molestation, adding currently some of them were back.

He recalled that scarcity of essential commodities such as textiles, soap and milk, which were being sold at cutthroat prices, was stopped and goods became common when the revolution was launched.

Mr Abayah, who was speaking on: “The echoes and legacies of the 31st December Revolution,” noted that the behaviour of people in politics today was removing the gains made through years of hard work and sweat. The doors of democracy were opened when the Revolution gave way to the formation of political parties that brought about the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which formed government and helped to lay good structures for the country’s economy.

He said: “With the current suffering now, we call on all democratic forces to join the NDC to help remove the NPP (New Patriotic Party) government from power through the ballot box in the next election.” It is, therefore, important that all who have attained the voting age register, so that they could vote for the right party.
