Spio-Garbrah calls on President Kufuor

Accra, Nov.10, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday called on stakeholders in telecommunications to partner Government to develop and promote its policy in the sector.

“Let us corporate to work together and advance Government’s policy in telecommunications”, he said.

President Kufuor made the call when Mr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.

Mr Spio-Garbrah is in Accra to participate in the three-day African Telecommunications Regulatory Forum that begins on Tuesday, November 11. He said the Government’s policy to link all Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) to the global network to promote learning and acquisition of knowledge was on course.

President Kufuor congratulated Mr Spio-Garbrah on his appointment to the CTO and said organizing the Forum in Ghana was a good rallying point and an impetus to Government’s policy on Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Mr Spio-Garbrah commended the Government on the implementation of the policy framework on telecommunications for development. He said it was a document based on many years of work in the communications sector with the understanding that ICT had been understood globally as one of the driving force for development and effective governance.

Mr Spio-Garbrah appealed to stakeholders in the communications sector, both public and private, to partner Government to utilize the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence on ICT to offer Ghanaians the opportunity to access ICT globally.

He said the CTO had now decided to admit Francophone, Nordic and other countries that previously were not members of the organisation into their fold in order that developing countries could benefit from the experience and resources of developed countries.

Mr Spio-Garbrah expressed appreciation to the Government for supporting his candidacy for the post.
