Spio-Garbrah appeals to media

Koforidua, Sept. 29, GNA – Dr Ekwwow Spio-Garbrah, an aspiring Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress(NDC)has appealed to media houses affiliated to the party to be circumspect in comments they make on the candidates to maintain unity within the party. He said those media houses should be held responsible when their comments created tensions and marred the cordial and peaceful relationships that had existed within the party.

Dr Spio-Garbrah made the appeal when addressing the press as part of his campaign tour of the Eastern Region at Koforidua on Friday. He noted that the media in the country had no problem with the NDC, but had problems with some members of the party and gave the assurance that the party would enjoy a new media-NDC relationship under his leadership when elected.

“I would be ready to apologise to any media house or person if the party is notified that it had not conducted itself well in its relationship with the journalist or media house,” he assured. Dr Spio-Garbrah said under his leadership, the NDC would review the salaries and service conditions of journalists and media personnel in the public sector in relationship with the salary structure of other workers in the country.

He recalled that as the NDC Minister of Communication he opened the Castle to both the public and private media with the introduction of post-Cabinet press briefing and the “Meet the Press” series for Ministers of State.

Dr Spio-Garbrah pledged to form alliances with other political parties such as the Nkrumahist parties when elected as the NDC flagbearer to help the NDC win the 2008 elections. Mr Julius Debrah, Eastern Regional Chairman of the party, reiterated the appeal to media houses affiliated to the NDC to desist from scandalizing any of the candidates contesting the presidential slot of the party.

He explained that should any of the candidates they were undermining was elected it would be difficult for the same media house to “manage the damage” caused.
