Special Prosecutor won’t solve corruption problems in Ghana – Maurice Ampaw

Controversial Lawyer, Maurice Ampaw says appointment of an Independent Special Prosecutor (ISP) would not solve the problem of corruption in Ghana.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians that when the Special Prosecutor (ISP) bill is passed into law, it will enhance accountability in the public life and weed out corrupt practices.

But Maurice Ampaw, on Kumasi-based Sikka Fm on Monday, wondered how effective the ISP will be in curbing corruption which has been described by many actors as an age old practice.

According to the celebrity lawyer, since most offices of the government are held by party members, it would be difficult to fight corruption using the ISP.

“Most of the appointment the president has made……. Let’s ask. He is doing it in favor of his party people, those who helped him and those around him. There are other people outside the party who are even better and can best fit such positions”. He observed.

He further outlined that, the main problems of various governments is that; they only look up to party members when doing appointments.

When asked whether the special prosecutor could end corruption in Ghana, he responded. “Special prosecutor can’t solve all our problems because institution like Commission for Human Right and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) which has still not been able to fight corruption therefore special prosecutor won’t solve the problems”. He claimed.

In his opinion fighting corruption needs political will and vigilantism on the part of Ghanaians. “We all need to be serious on the fight against corruption”. He stressed

The ISP was expected to be established last month according to president Nana Addo but the bill was laid before parliament, withdrawn and re-laid
