Speaker of Parliament returns from Mauritius

Accra, Nov. 11, GNA – The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey returned to Accra last night after attending the Ninth Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliament of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association of the African Region, which took place in Port Louis, Mauritius.

The one-week conference, which was attended, by 17 Speakers and Presiding Officers discussed topics such as managing the democratic dispensation in Africa, NEPAD and its implementation, among other issues.

In a chat with journalists at the airport Mr John Agama, Deputy Clerk of Parliament, who accompanied the Speaker said Mr Adjetey spoke on NEPAD and its implementation addressing Africa’s problems to their roots, adding that, this was considered one of the most thoroughly treated topics.

He said following Mr Adjetey’s presentation the conference agreed to hold a special meeting on NEPAD, which South Africa had offered to host.

Mr Agama said the Speaker drew attention to the fact that it would be better for African countries to harness their resources through unity for progress on the continent rather seek assistance from foreign donors.

Mr Adjetey was retained on the standing committee and elected as the vice chairperson of the Association at the end of the conference.
