Son in prison custody for threatening and assaulting father

Asamankese, March 26, GNA – Michael Addo Kumi, a 24 year-old mechanic apprentice, has appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court for assaulting his father and threatening him with death. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison custody until April 6. Presenting the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector Kate Ogyiri, said in the morning of March 21, the complainant Frederick Kofi Kumi approached the accused and demanded GH C2.00 he had borrowed from him.

She said the accused was however not able to refund the money. At about 1330 hours the same day, Addo returned from Mepom where they lived and on seeing his father at home became furious with him. The prosecutor said Addo held his father’s shirt, pinned him to a wall and slapped his face a number of times. He also tore his father’s shirt with the argument that his father did not look after him during his childhood. The following day, Addo went to town again and on his return in the afternoon, found his father sleeping on a bench and went straight to his room, took a sharp cutlass and threatened to kill him with it. The prosecutor said a witness shouted for help and the cutlass was collected from Addo, and his father advised to leave the house for his own safety. Addo’s father went to the police and lodged a complaint and Addo was arrested.

The accused told the court that though he assaulted his father, he did not threaten to kill him with a cutlass. The judge then ordered that he should be kept away from his father for sometime and therefore remanded him in prison custody until April 6.
