Some commercial transport operators in Accra have begun the effective implementation of a 15% reduction in transport fares, as directed by their umbrella body, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), starting today, May 26, 2025.
Passengers who spoke to Daily Post Ghana reporter Akua Oteng Amponsah at Circle asserted that the initial fare from Ablekuma to Circle was 9.00 cedis, but this morning, the fare has been reduced to 7.50 cedis, reflecting the 15% reduction.
“We used to pay 9.00 cedis for everything coming to Circle, but this morning, we only had to pay 7.50 cedis, and we’re happy about it,” some passengers expressed joy.
Meanwhile, passengers from Dansoman at Circle expressed the same feeling about the reduced price, saying, “We used to pay 10 cedis from here to Dansoman, but we paid 8.50 cedis this morning,” they disclosed similarly.
However, some passengers from Kasoa were seen exchanging insults in a heated argument with a driver and his mate over their refusal to adhere to the 15% reduction in fares.
While passengers from Ablekuma and Dansoman are enjoying the full implementation of the reduction, others are having a tough time with drivers over their refusal to adhere to it.
Meanwhile, The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has cautioned transport stations and branches against defying the newly implemented 15% fare reduction, emphasising that sanctions will be imposed on those who fail to comply.
Abass Imoro, the union’s PRO in a press statement acknowledged that some operators in the Ashanti Region had cited late communication as a reason for their delay in adjusting fares.
However, he assured that measures have been put in place to ensure full compliance.
