Afife, Feb 9, GNA – Except in extreme cases, not all buildings marked for demolition to pave way for the reconstruction of the Akatsi-Aflao highway would be demolished.
Mr Rex Edekor, Project Resident Engineer, said this when he addressed residents of Afife last Friday on issues relating to the project. r Edekor said the social cost to the people and the financial cost to=
government if all the houses were to be demolished would be more than the=
actual cost of the project. He said the markings done by the evaluation experts were to guide=
the road engineers of Geo China Engineering Company to decide on which of= the buildings should be demolished He said all kiosks sited along the road would however be removed for= the construction of pedestrian walkways.
Mr Edekor advised residents to avoid patronizing stolen constructio= n materials mainly cement from workers engaged on the project. He said the strength of culverts and drainage systems being construc= ted would be affected if the workers steal part of the materials meant for th= em. Regarding complaints in respect of dust pollution in the community, Mr Edekor said negotiations were being held with the Akatsi District Assembl= y to relax its conditions and allow the contractors to draw water from its dam for watering the dusty road.
He appealed to the residents to bear with the contractor to enable i= t complete the project within the 10 months deadline. Mr Henry Ametefe, Volta Regional Coordinator of NADMO who was in the=
town to present high capacity water tanks to the people, urged them to be=
vigilant against the stealing of construction material by some of its workers.
