Soften stand on SSNIT deductions towards NHIS- TESCON

Kumasi, Oct 8, GNA- The Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has called on the leadership of the Trades Union congress (TUC) to soften its stand on the proposed two-and-a-half percent SSNIT deductions towards the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Confederacy and signed by its chairman, Mr Yussif Zakaria in Kumasi on Tuesday. The students noted that good health was the most important aspect of a worker’s life and must not be toyed with.

They said they found it unacceptable that the leadership of the labour union should seek to thwart an attempt by the government to replace the discredited cash and carry system with a more humane scheme that would make health care easily accessible to all without discrimination.

The refusal by majority of workers to participate in the TUC’s demonstration should send a signal to its leadership that workers cannot be taken for a ride.

The students said it was quite unfortunate and worrying that the good intentions behind the establishment of the NHIS, was being misconstrued.
