Sodom & Gomorrah demolition suspended

The Accra Metropolitan Authority has deferred its decision to demolish structures at Sodom and Gomorrah, a slum in Accra till the high court rules on the case brought against it by the squatters. The AMA?s two-week ultimatum to the slum dwellers expires today but the squatters are contesting the eviction notice in court.

The Center for Public Interest Law (CEPIL), which is representing them, is asking the Metropolitan authorities to resettle them in accordance with recommendations of the impact assessment programme on the project. The eviction is to pave way for work to progress on the Korle Lagoon Ecological Restoration Project. The AMA says it is being compelled to evict the squatters because the delay of the project is causing the state to lose $74,000 a day.
