Socialist Forum greets National Reform Party

The Socialist Forum of Ghana on Friday said it hopes the National Reform Party (NRP) would take “very bold steps” during its extraordinary congress this weekend to facilitate the unity of progressive forces and the building of a viable alternative to both the NPP and NDC.

In a statement signed by Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr for the National Co-ordinator, the Forum said it noted that the Congress at Sunyani would deliberate on national and international issues and map out a strategy for rallying progressive forces together to fight “the forces of social injustice, poverty and war.

“The Socialist Forum of Ghana affirms its strong commitment to the unity of ill progressive forces in the face of the onslaught of local and international forces of reaction on the gains of the socialist and independence movements worldwide.”

The Forum said it noted that the NPP (New Patriotic Party) Administration was pursuing “the most decadent form” of the Structural Adjustment Programme under the World Bank and International Monetary Fund “with disastrous consequences”.

“Within the last 24 months, utility tariffs have risen by more than 100 per cent and fuel prices have shot up cumulatively by more than 200 per cent.

“The country’s external and internal debts are rising. The rate of inflation has gone up from 11 per cent last year to 16 per cent this year.”

The statement said over a two-year period, the cedi had dropped in value by about 23 per cent, adding that the conditions of life of the population had become worse.
