Social Security Organizations Asked To Develop Schemes Apart From That Of Pension

Accra, (Greater Accra) 17 Oct.,

The training seminar of the International Social Security Association (ISSA) for English-speaking African countries, has ended in Accra with a call on participants to quickly develop social security schemes other than pension funds and end-of- service benefits. The latter do not provide adequate and sustainable means of providing for workers after several years of dedicated service. The seminar, attended by 61 participants from 12-member states, is under the auspices of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). It was for middle level management personnel of member associations. Closing the seminar, Mr. Victor Selormey, deputy Minister of Finance, decried the slow pace of social security development in English-speaking Africa, saying ”We need to accelerate the pace for social security development, if we are to move abreast with time”. He said the French-speaking countries on the continent have taken a decisive lead in administering social welfare insurance schemes that have proved very beneficial to their working people.
