Smartphone which performs medical tests could save lives

A smartphone that performs a whole range of medical tests and sends a report of the results to the user and his physician has been launched by an Israeli company, LifeWatch Technologies.

Experts say it is the world’s first smartphone to offer multiple medical tests and can remind people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, to take their medication on time, which has potentially life-saving benefits.

Externally, LifeWatch V looks just like any other smartphone, yet its sleek frame contains quick, accurate and high-quality medical sensors, powering seven health tests.

A statement from the Israeli Embassy in Ghana on Thursday said LifeWatch V has sensors embedded in it that allows the user to check his blood oxygen saturation level and measure his blood pressure with an attached sleeve.

The user can also depend on it to keep track his daily footsteps and temperature levels.

Designed to make life easier for the user, LifeWatch V’s thermometer allows enables the user to check his temperature while its pedometer helps him keep track of his daily footsteps; and at the same time helps the user figure out his body fat percentage, plan his diet and log his workouts.

LifeWatch Technologies Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Yacov Geva says the device would be especially useful to help manage many aspects of a chronic medical condition such as diabetes.

“Blood glucose test strips can be inserted right into a portal on the phone’s stainless-steel frame and it can send reminders to check glucose levels and take insulin,” the statement said.
