SkyTrain Scandal Takes Sudden Twist as Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi Hospitalized

A health scare has interrupted proceedings in the high-profile SkyTrain trial, as Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chair of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was expected to appear before an Accra High Court over his alleged role in the controversial $2 million SkyTrain deal, but his legal team informed the court that he had suffered a medical emergency and was currently receiving treatment.

This marks the second time he has missed court due to health concerns, raising concerns about the pace and continuity of the case.

The case stems from a 2019 investment made by the GIIF into the now-defunct Accra SkyTrain project, a proposed urban monorail transport system that was widely promoted but never materialized. Prosecutors allege that $2 million was transferred from the fund to Africa Investor Holdings Limited, a private entity, without appropriate approvals or returns.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and his co-accused, former GIIF CEO Solomon Asamoah, are facing multiple charges including: Conspiracy to commit crime, causing financial loss to the state, breach of public trust, unauthorized dissipation of public funds

While Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s absence was medically excused, Solomon Asamoah was present in court but remains in custody, having failed to meet the stringent bail requirements set by the court—GH¢15 million with two justified sureties.

The presiding judge, Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, has adjourned the case to May 26, 2025, pending updates on Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s condition.

The SkyTrain saga has stirred public frustration, with critics citing it as another example of high-level mismanagement of public funds. The deal, once touted as a game-changer for urban transport in Accra, has instead become symbolic of unfulfilled promises and accountability gaps in infrastructure development.

As the court awaits the next hearing, all eyes remain on whether the health of the embattled professor will delay justice, or derail the case entirely.
