Six in court for assaulting policeman

Sunyani, Nov 30, GNA – Six persons including a 70-year-old woman have appeared before the Sunyani Circuit Court for assaulting a public officer at Chiraa near Sunyani.

The are Mana Ammah, a farmer 46, Agnes Owusuaah 70, a farmer, Adwoa Margaret, 40, a labourer, Georgina Kisiwaa, 40, Ward Assistant, Abena Asantewaa, hair dresser 20, and Albert Brobbey, 35, a mason. They all pleaded not guilty to two counts of rioting and assaulting a public officer and were granted five million cedis each with one surety.

DSP Alex Yartey Tawiah, prosecuting, said the complainant Superintendent Osei Asibey Ahenkan is in charge of Sunyani District and resident at Chiraa.

On November 6 a team of police men led by Superintendent Ahenkan reported at Chiraa to maintain peace and order following a permit granted to the chief of Chiraa for the installation of a new Queen mother at Chiraa.

He said a group of people including the accused persons beat gong-gong and sang war songs to disrupt the occasion. In attempt to advise the group to stop their disturbances some of the group members rushed on the police and pushed Superintendent Ahenkan down.

DSP Yartey said when the installation started the group led by Ammah started beat gong-gong, chanted war songs and threw stones at the Police to disrupt the installation. The Police managed to arrest the six.
