Six Dead, Several Injured in Stampede at El-Wak Stadium During Military Recruitment

A stampede at the El-Wak Stadium, where the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is conducting its recruitment exercise, has claimed the lives of six prospective recruits, the military has confirmed.

In a statement, the GAF expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting that the incident occurred shortly before the official start of the 2025/2026 recruitment process.

According to preliminary findings, the chaos began when a large number of applicants broke through security barriers and forced their way into the venue around 6:20 a.m., ahead of the scheduled screening.

The stampede resulted in the deaths of six applicants, with several others sustaining various degrees of injury.

Those injured are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, the statement added.
