Sissala West District records 70.9% failure in BECE results

Out of a total of 840 candidates that sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region, 591 of them representing 70.9%, failed.

Mr. Moses Dramani Luri, the Sissala West District Chief Executive (DCE) who said this during the Assembly’s second ordinary meeting in Gwollu, said only 243 of the candidates representing 29.1% passed.

Mr. Luri said the 29.1% pass though not the best of performance was still an improvement over the 28% pass recorded last year in the district.

The DCE attributed the poor performance of candidates in the BECE to a number of factors including lack of teachers’ accommodation, poor monitoring and supervision as well as a teacher gap of 312 among others.

Mr. Luri said the Assembly would sponsor 20 teacher trainees and recruit pupil teachers to help scale up students’ performance in the BECE.

He appealed to the Assembly members to make the welfare of teachers posted to their Electoral Areas very paramount by assisting them to get decent accommodation among other things to enable them stay in comfort to teach.
