Sirleaf Johnson Commends Ghana

The President of the Republic of Liberia, Mrs. Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, today praised Ghana for her enormous support during and after the civil war that devastated Liberia.

‘In recent times, when Liberia went through difficult time, it was Ghana and some other two countries that came to our aid. Ghana spearheaded the dialogue, discussions and negotiation that finally led to the road map of peace in Liberia,’ The President noted. Mrs. Johnson made the remark at bilateral talks with President John Evans Atta Mills at the Castle, Osu in Accra, as part of her two-day official visit to Ghana.

She said Ghana is a model to learn from, particularly those who have been left behind in meeting their development objectives and said it is time to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Ghana and Liberia in order to tap from Ghana’s experience.

According to her, measures are being put in place to find their way back into development. ‘This can happen from a country that has a strong bond with Liberia. We are opened to work with Ghana for better living condition of our people.’

President Johnson expressed her gratitude to the government and the people of Ghana for hosting Liberians during the war. She also congratulated the Volta River Authority for its electrification projects in Liberia.

On his part, President Atta Mills, said ‘it is an honour to have you visiting Ghana at this time,’ saying the visit will consolidate the cordial relationship between the two countries and compare notes to see how best to ensure development in their respective countries.

President Mills observed that Africa has enough potentials and resources but needs determination and will to be able to utilise those resources for the best of the people.’

‘I commend you for what you have achieved so far. You started gradually with nothing but with your experience, you are making headway,’ he said.

He hoped the Liberian President’s visit will go a long way for the two countries to work closely as partners.
