Chairman of the National Peace Council says the projection by New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afryie could have plunged the nation into serious anarchy.
Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante who doubles as head of the Methodist church, Ghana, explained that the Council upon hearing the NPP chief scribe churning out figures on radio felt there was the need to act swiftly.
“Some members of the Council heard the NPP General Secretary making certain figures public and advising members of the party to wear white dresses to church the next morning. And we believed that was extremely dangerous. So quickly I made phone calls to the rest of the members and called Dr Afari Gyan personally to organize the meeting”, Most Rev. Professor Asante revealed on Citi FM.
He said during the meeting, the leadership of the NPP was offered the opportunity to provide evidence regarding the fraud allegations.
But the argument and evidence put across by the NPP executives were not convincing enough to hold up the announcement of the results, the respected priest added.
Against that backdrop, Most Rev. Professor Asante advised the media to be very circumspect when reporting on electoral matters, since the information the media put in the public domain has the tendency of disturbing the stability of the nation.
Mr. Owusu Afriyie otherwise known as Sir John prior to the announcement of the presidential results by the EC hurriedly arranged a press conference and said the NPP had won the election by 51% of the total valid votes cast, compared to the NDC candidate John Mahama’s 46%.
The NPP’s move attracted widespread criticisms from a section of the public and civil society groups.
