The Ministry of Works and Housing has begun dredging some major drains in Accra and Tema as a short-term measure to mitigate the effects of perennial flooding in the two cities.
The project will be completed before the heavy rainy season sets in by April, this year.
Mr Yaw Barimah, Minister for Works and Housing, announced this when he inspected the works being carried out at major drains from Tema community 18 to the Sakumono Lagoon.
The dredging is currently concentrating on clearing the paths in drains and streams in areas like Alajo, a suburb of Accra and Tema Communities 18, 19 and 20 to allow the free flow of water.
Mr Barimah said the Ministry and other partners are considering a long-term measure, which would stop the problem of insecurity anytime it rains but stressed that there is a limit to what the government can do if people do not change the attitude of dumping garbage into drains.
“Ghanaians must realise that we can no longer take the matter of our safety for granted,” he said.
