Shocking! Family sets up abode in ECG culvert on Accra street

Officers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Wednesday September 10 swooped on a family reported to have set up an abode in one of the Company’s underground chambers near Liberation Circle in Accra.

The chamber is one of the maintenance hubs of ECG and houses some of its major cables.

But the family is said to have turned the culvert into an abode where members bath, cook and engage in other household chores.

Authorities of the ECG said they were hinted of the activities of the family by some concerned citizens.

Upon their arrest last Wednesday, the head of the family who gave his name as Mohammed Ali admitted that he stays in the underground chamber though he has a house in Ashaley Botwe near Madina.

“When I sell pure water, it is too far to go back to my background. That’s why I maintain this place,” Ali, 38, told officials of ECG when he was arrested.

He is said to be staying  there with two kids.

He justified his stay, saying it has warded off criminals who used the manhole for various vices.

Tracing his roots to Togo, Ali also said he is a student and uses the place for his studies.

He has since been handed to the Accra Central Division of the Ghana Police Service, and his belongings have been removed from the culvert.
