SFG salutes Ghanaians

on the 55th anniversary of independence

The Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG) on the 55th anniversary celebration of Ghana’s independence, commended the heroes and heroines whose blood and toil freed Ghana from the yoke of colonial exploitation and oppression.

“We state emphatically that the role of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s First President was extraordinary and he more than anyone else justifiably bears the singular honour of being the torch bearer of African independence and the bold effort to build a continental union government.”

This was contained in a statement issued in Accra on Monday, by Dr David Pessey, on behalf of the Convener.

It said Ghana needed to return to the ideals of the independence movement focussed on the exploitation of African resources to resolve the problems of the African people and the pursuit of internationalism anchored on the fight against all forms of racism and exploitation.

The statement said “fifty-five years ago the people of Ghana mobilised under the vanguard of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), wrestled national independence from the grip of the British empire and set upon the path of national reconstruction within the framework of Pan-Africanism and a political system founded on the principles of social justice”.

It said “in a relatively short period of nine years, the Gold Coast was transformed into a new Ghana with a booming economy and a vanguard for the struggle for liberation throughout Africa and elsewhere. More than 400 state owned enterprises were set up as part of the effort to de-link the national economy from the colonial metropolis. These enterprises produced agricultural products, electronics including radios, televisions and refrigerators; beverages of all kinds, footwear, clothing, furniture, basic industrial equipment and many more.”
