Severe rainstorm damages schools, clinic in Kumasi

Kumasi, March 18, GNA – A cluster of schools and a clinic were badly damaged with their roofs completely ripped off, following a severe rainstorm that hit Kumasi at Amanfrom on Tuesday. Items such as computers, text books, furniture, school uniforms and electrical appliances, amounting to more than GH¢200,000 got destroyed after classrooms got flooded. The clinic was said to belong to the Come Preach Christ (CPC), Ministries in Kumasi.

Elder Kofi Boakye, a member of the CPC Ministries who spoke to the Ghana News Agency at the scene of the disaster said the storm, which started at about 1530 hours last Sunday, lasted for only 15 minutes. He said that, there were no casualties even though school was in session when the rains started. Elder Kofi Boakye expressed grief that the disaster apart from disrupting learning, has also affected the delivery of clinical services at the clinic, which is the only one serving the Amanfrom and near-by communities.

The situation, he said, has also compelled the school with total population of 926 to close down indefinitely pending the rehabilitation of the buildings.

Elder Boakye said final year students who were preparing for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination sometime in April next month, have been asked to attend extra classes to enable them complete their syllabi.

He has therefore made a passionate appeal to the general public, philanthropists and civil society organizations to help rehabilitate the school for serious academic work to resume.
