Seventeen districts in Eastern Region receive relief items

Koforidua, June 29, GNA – The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has presented relief it ems estimated at GH¢ 87,000 to 17 districts in the region. The items would be distributed to individuals and institutions which

suffered different forms of disasters during the recent floods. The items include 163 packets of roofing sheets, 48 bales of used clothing, 135 bags of rice, 135 bags of beans, 135 bags of maize, 525 mattresses 420 plastic bowls and buckets and soap. The beneficiary districts include Fanteakwa, Akuapem South, Akuapem North, East Akim, Kwahu West, Kwahu East, Birim North, West Akim and Uppe r Manya.

Presenting the items to the district co-ordinators, Mr Ransford Owus u Boakye, Eastern Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, advised them to consider public institutions, religious organizations and the vulnerable in their districts first when distributing the items. He advised people in the rural communities to use good building materials when constructing their buildings and where possible, seek expe rt advice to help reduce disasters during rain storms.

Mr Boakye advised communities and institutions like churches and schools to plant trees to serve as wind breaks to help protect buildings against heavy rains and storms. He said his office would launch a clean-up exercise to be held annua lly by all districts in the region before the onset of the rains to help redu ce floods. Mr Boakye called on the people to take the education campaign on the

H1N1 very seriously. He said they should wash their hands with soap before eating and use

their handkerchiefs to cover their nose when sneezing. 29 June 10
