Seven Gomoa schools scores zero per cent in BECE

Apam, C/R, Feb 26, GNA – Seven Junior Secondary Schools in the Gomoa District of the Central Region scored zero per cent in the last year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The schools are Gomoa Abonko Methodist Junior Secondary School (JSS), Ayensuadze Presbyterian JSS, Oguaakrom D/C JSS, Aprah S.D.A JSS, Gomoa Ajumako Ankamu JSS, Kweikrom D/C JSS and Gomoa Dominase Methodist JSS.

Mr Isaac Baidoo, Acting District Director of Education, told the Ghana News Agency at Apam on Wednesday that staffing poor was the main cause of the mass failures.

He bemoaned that most of the schools, especially in the remote part of the district did not have teachers, adding that some had one trained teacher others did not have at all to teach the children. Mr Baidoo said that the children were not serious in their studies and parents’ poor attitude towards school was a contributory factor for the falling standard of education in the District.

The Acting Director told GNA that for instance, when the children finished writing their mock examinations they would stop attending school and report few days to the examination.

He noted that the schools also lacked teaching materials, which posed serious threat to the performance of the students. Mr Baidoo called on the parents in the district to encourage their children to attend school since education was the key to every nation’s development.

The Acting Education Director expressed the hope that this year might be different because supervision had been to ensure effective teaching and learning.
