Seven assault suspects remanded

Tarkwa (W/R), Nov. 23, GNA – A Tarkwa circuit court has remanded in prison custody on Monday, seven suspects, who were arrested in connection with the assault on security men at Prestea last Saturday. They were Mohammed Issahaku, Kwame Joseph, Kweku Damari and James Nkrumah alias Oldman.

The rest were Orlando Bawale, Gelilu Dedu and Anthony Dakora. All are galamsey operators.

Their pleas were not taken and the court presided over by Mr John Aject Nasam, ordered them to re-appear on December 7, 2005. It would be recalled that three security personnel including Constable Michael Ayisi of the Ghana Police Service, stationed at Prestea were assaulted on November 19, 2005.

Constable Ayisi sustained head injury and was flown to the Military Hospital for treatment.

The other two security men were however, treated and discharged. Last Saturday, galamsey operators numbering about 100, besieged the Bogoso Gold Limited’s (BGL) pit at Prestea to operate, but were confronted by security men on duty at the pit. In the process, the security men were attacked, but with the intervention of other security men, the galamsey operators retreated.

They took away Constable Ayisi’s AK 47 raffle but was later found.
