Set New Standard as Host of 2026 GUSA Games – GUSA President to UEW

The President of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA), Ibrahim Tanko, has called on the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to raise the bar as hosts of the upcoming 2026 GUSA Games, urging the institution to set a new benchmark for excellence in university sports.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) on UEW’s campus, Mr. Tanko praised the university’s past achievements and challenged the newly formed committee to lead by example.

“UEW is a leading institution, and we expect it to set the pace for others to follow,” he said. “The last edition was extraordinary, and though the University of Ghana made great efforts to improve upon it, it still couldn’t quite match what UEW had previously achieved.”

The 2026 edition of the GUSA Games, Ghana’s premier university-level multi-sport competition, will return to Winneba, and expectations are high. UEW, having previously set a strong precedent, now faces the challenge of delivering what many hope will be the most impressive Games in the competition’s history.

While acknowledging the realities of resource limitations, Mr. Tanko encouraged the university to aim high.

“Whether the resources are available or not, we hope the outcome will be exceptional,” he said, adding that teamwork and innovation would be key to success.

The LOC, now officially inaugurated, will steer preparations in the months ahead. Members of the university community, along with the national sports fraternity, are expected to play a central role in ensuring the event meets the high standards set in previous years.

UEW Vice-Chancellor and other senior administrators attended the ceremony, affirming the university’s commitment to delivering a Games that blends athletic excellence with the unique spirit of Ghanaian university life.

Preparations are already underway, with infrastructure reviews and athlete welfare plans among the top priorities for the LOC.

The 2026 GUSA Games are expected to attract thousands of student-athletes from across Ghana’s tertiary institutions, competing in a wide range of disciplines, from athletics and football to volleyball and swimming.
