Self-styled contractor granted bail

Mr Samuel Kwasi Mensah Amofa, a self-styled contractor, who went to borrow GH¢18,000 from a medical doctor with the intent of re-constructing a street but went into hiding, appeared on Tuesday before an Accra Circuit charged with defrauding by false pretences.

He pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Mr. Eric Kyei-Baffour granted Amofa bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with one surety. The court ordered that the surety should be a public sector worker.

Amofa would reappear on September 5.

The Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abraham Annor, told the court that in November 2010, the accused was introduced to the complainant by a friend.

In the course of their conversation, the accused introduced himself as the owner of the Yasnus Ventures and he told the doctor that he had won a road re-gravelling contract from the Adentan Municipal Assembly.

He said on November 26, 2010, the accused approached the doctor and requested for the funds to enable his company execute the project.

The doctor trusted the accused as the true owner of the company and released the money to him with a written agreement of paying back by the end of December 2010 but the accused went into hiding.

The prosecutor said a report was made to the Police and upon investigation, the accused was arrested on May 5, 2011.

ASP Annor said further investigation revealed that Yasnus Ventures was registered by Yasmin Inusah in February 2001 and not the accused.
