Takoradi, Oct.19, GNA – Teachers within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis resumed work last Monday after embarking on a two-week strike action on September 29.
The strike action was due to alleged delay and refusal of the Government to pay negotiated salaries to them. A tour by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday to some schools within the Metropolis revealed that public schools were in session and academic work was progressing steadily.
Some of the schools visited were, Anaji STMA, Ntankforul STMA, Timbod, Bethel Methodist, Anglican, Bishop Essuah Catholic, SDA Primary and Higgins Primary.
Speaking to the GNA, the teachers said they took the action because negotiations with the Government for an increase in salary levels expected to start in March this year was delayed to June and in addition, the Government’s increase of 10 per cent was not acceptable to them.
The teachers have now accepted a 11.5 per cent increase in salaries across board from June this year, while special negotiated allowances totalling 52 billion cedis would be paid to members of the Consultative Forum.
The forum is made up of The Civil Servants Association (CSA), Ghana national Association of Teachers (GNAT), Judicial Service of Ghana (JUSAG), Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (RNA).
