Security on high alert in Tamale

Security is on the high alert in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, following renewed clashes last night between two Muslim sects.

Last Sunday members of the Tijaniya and the Al-Sunnah engaged in violent confrontation over the varied interpretation of some verses in the Qur’an.

Last night gunshots were heard around the Afajura Mosque where members of the Al-Sunnah where observing their Isha prayers.

They later erected road blocks and mounted a search for members of the rival sect.

A team of police and military officers upon a tip-off moved to the scene and averted what could have turned into a bloody clash.

Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP George Tuffour in an interview with XYZ News said the security services are doing everything possible to ensure peace in the region and avert any further clashes.
