Assin Foso, (C/R) June 13, GNA – A Magistrate Court at Assin Foso on Friday sentenced a 28-year-old security man in the town to two years imprisonment for engaging in multiple registrations during the last voter registration exercise.
James Mensah who pleaded guilty to the charge was also barred from registering as a voter for five years, starting from the date of ending his jail sentence.
Dr Jacob Quarmy Owusu who presided over said the court took a serious view of the offence because such wrongdoings could “contaminate and pervert” the credible electoral system which all Ghanaians were yearning for.
Prosecuting, Inspector Kingsley Wiredu said on June 10 this year, the accused went to the Assin Foso police station registration centre No B100702 with a slip bearing his name to have his picture taken for the processing of his voter identity card (ID).
Insp. Wiredu said after the picture had been taken, a voter ID card which had his picture embossed dropped from his pocket. When an official at the station examined the card, he released that it bore a different registration number (No B100201) but with another name Yaw Kwarteng.
According to the prosecutor, investigation revealed that Mensah applied for registration at registration centre No B100201 at the fire station.
