Security man in trouble for providing fake visa

Tema, April 8, GNA – A security man of the British High Commission in Accra, who succeeded in defrauding a businessman of 118 million cedis under the pretext of providing him with a British visa, has been remanded in prison custody by the Tema Circuit Court ‘B’.

Both the security man, Prosper Komla Agbenyaga Awuku and his accomplice Richard Abgenoxevi, a trader, pleaded guilty with explanation to charges of conspiracy to commit crime and defrauding by false pretences.

Awuku after his explanation that he did not know that those he entrusted “the job” to had given him a fake visa, was found guilty while Abgenoxevi who said he was only Komla’s messenger was granted bail in the sum of 50 million cedis with one surety.

They are both to re-appear before the court on April 21, this year. Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor told the court presided over by Mr Stephen K. Teye that the complainant in the case had a brother in the United Kingdom who introduced Awuku to him in November last year as a staff of the High Commission who could assist them obtain visas. She said when Awuku was contacted he charged 118 million cedis and after collecting part payment introduced Abgenoxevi as his brother he would send to collect the other part of the money.

After the amount had been paid in full Awuku handed over a British visa to the complainant but the one for his brother was detected to be fake on April 3, this year, at the Airport as he was about to board a plane.

A report was then made to the Police and the two accused persons were arrested.
