Sea threatens Dzita in Volta Region

Accra, Sept. 18, GNA – A citizen of Dzita in the Keta District of the Volta Region on Tuesday appealed to the government, the Keta District Assembly and NGOs to save Dzita and Akplorwotorkor from sea erosion that has been wrecking havoc in the area.

Mr. Etse Yao Agbenyega told the Ghana News Agency in Accra that prompt remedial action was needed to resolve the perennial problem. “The stretch of road from Akplorwotorkor through Dzita to Anyanui is being eaten up by the hungry sea,” he said. “A few days ago, the waves of the sea had cut into two the road network at the area.” Mr Agbenyega said the most worrying concern of the people was that if nothing was done about the problem, the sea would eat up the road and make it impassable.

This, he said, would make the sea wash away towns and villages and thereby create serious social and economic problems. “The solution to the problem is concerted efforts by central government, the district assembly and NGOs to come together to save the situation. This calls for a multi-sectoral approach,” Mr Agbenyega said.
