Scientists challenged to solve plastic waste menace

Accra, April 22 GNA – Mr Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Chief Executive, on Friday challenged Ghanaian scientists to come with solutions to tackle the sachet water menace in the country.

He also deplored the poor and unsanitary conditions under which most sachet water were produced and sold to the general public. Mr Blankson was speaking at the ninth Biennial Delegates Conference of the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) in Accra. The conference, which attracted Youth Leaders from all the eight dioceses of the Church in Accra, was on the theme: “A youth, called and ready to serve”.

Mr Blankson said 80 per cent of the garbage in the city was generated from plastic waste whiles the assembly spent 50 per cent of its revenue on waste management in the city. He said the Assembly was going to temporarily ban sachet water production in the Metropolis to allow people go round to collect plastic waste from the streets and drains. Mr Ato Essuman, Lay President of the Methodist Church, urged the youth to be part of the solution in solving the filth in their communities. He called for the re-kindling of the spirit of voluntarism among the youth, which he said, was dying in the system. Mr Essuman, who is also a member of the Council of State, appealed to the youth to take their education seriously to assume responsible positions in the country in future. The Right Reverend Samuel Kwami Hodasi, Methodist Bishop of Accra, charged the delegates to be ready and be prepared to serve people in their communities.

He said as Christian youth leaders they must surrender their lives to the work of God and also serve as example to other people in the community to copy.
