Accra, Jan. 14, GNA – Professor Kwame Gyekye of the Department of Philosophy, University of Ghana, Legon on Wednesday said there was the need for a national discussion on the creation of a scientific culture to discourage Ghanaians from giving natural phenomena, superstitious interpretations.
He said: “In the context of a global scientific culture, if we miss the scientific and consequently the technological boat, we do so at our own peril. Without research our country can hardly make any meaningful progress”.
Prof. Gyekye, spokesperson for members of the planning committee for the National Forum on Harnessing Research, Science and Technology for Sustainable Development was speaking at the official launching of the forum in Accra.
He stressed: “We need to create an awareness for science and technology in the Ghanaian Public.”
The Forum, scheduled for March 15 to 19 is under the auspices of the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE).
It aims at establishing and fostering collaboration between the academia and indigenous industrial entrepreneurs.
Prof. Gyekye said the Forum would harness the necessary human capital base to support scientific and economic innovations.
To this end, a National Directory of Local Researchers, Scientists, Technologists and other experts would be published for easy accessibility.
Prof. Gyekye said works undertaken by the various scientific institutions in the country would also be mounted during exhibitions to be organized as part of the Forum. About 180 participants are expected at the Forum. 14 Jan. 04
