Schools urged to set up anti-drug committees

Kumasi, July 25, GNA – Madam Beatrice Ennison, Head of the Dispensing Technology Department of the Kumasi Polytechnic, has advocated the setting up of anti-drug committees in schools to sensitise the youth on the dangers of drug abuse.

She suggested that the committees should comprise teachers, students and experts who would be tasked with the responsibility of detecting early signs of drug addiction among students so as to counsel them.

Madam Ennison was speaking at an HIV/AIDS and drug abuse sensitisation programme for pupils and students of the God Bless Living Waters Experimental School in Kumasi on Friday.

The programme had as its theme: “Drug Abuse Among Students, Whose Responsibility”.

Madam Ennison said it was disheartening to see that in spite of the damage being done to students through drug abuse and its attendant consequences on the nation, the society and school authorities less discussed issues on drug abuse.

“We must not pretend as if nothing is happening in our schools only to be overtaken by events”.

She consequently called on parents to collaborate with school authorities and all stakeholders in education to curb the increase in drug abuse among students.

Mr Kwaku Nti, headteacher of the school, said the programme would be held annually to enlighten the students on drugs.
