School forced to run shift system due to destruction of classrooms

The destruction of classroom blocks of the Breman Baako D/A Basic School in the Central Region has forced school authorities to run a shift system.

A rainstorm on November 1 ripped off the roof of a section of the classroom blocks and has since rendered the affected places uninhabitable. Classrooms of Primary 6 to JHS 2 were affected.

Learning materials including textbooks, exercise books and some record keeping books were also destroyed by the storm that occurred at about 4:00pm at a time the school had closed.

No casualties were recorded. Meanwhile, in view of the limited classrooms occasioned by the destruction, the school authorities have grouped the pupils into two for the shift system, which sees pupils in kindergarten to Primary 5 attend classes from 8:00am to 12:00pm.

Those in Primary 6 to JHS 3 who are in the afternoon shift, report to school from 12:00pm to 5:00pm daily. The situation, according to some parents and teachers, is affecting academic work at the school, and are calling for immediate intervention to fix the affected classrooms.

Though officials from the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District Assembly including the Chief Executive have visited the school to assess the level of destruction, they are yet to take any action to remedy the situation.

Some parents fear the current shift system could further worsen the poor academic performance of pupils in the district if the situation is not immediately addressed.

Some teachers who spoke to 3News on condition of anonymity claimed the school was already in dire need of basic amenities including electricity, a library and ICT centre .

In in their attempt to improve the academic performance, the school introduced prep for the JHS pupils from 7pm to 8:30 daily but that is being hampered by the lack of electricity in the classrooms.
