Accra, May 30, GNA – About 240 million dollars would be required a year under the School Feeding Programme in Africa from 2006-2010. African Governments are expected to provide a quarter of the amount through the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the rest by the private sector. President John Agyekum Kufuor announced this on Monday when Ms. Joan Holmes, President of the Global Hunger Project paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.
He therefore, called on the organisation to be part of the programme as their contribution towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). President Kufuor said it was the Government’s policy to fight poverty and hunger to unleash wealth to promote growth using micro-credit facilities, provision of improved seeds and inputs as well as micro-irrigation systems and free feeding of school children. He said such policies and programmes were being implemented to give self-respect and self-confidence to the people and expressed appreciation to the organisation for undertaking similar programmes in the rural communities in Ghana.
Ms Holmes said Ghana had become the beacon of hope for Africa’s development and their support was, especially for women in Africa to improve on their living standards towards the achievement of the MDG’s. The Project operates in eight African countries.
