School children ask for holiday on March 29

Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), March 24, GNA – Pupils and teachers of Adaklu Kodzobi Local Authority Primary and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the Adaklu Anyigbe District, have appealed to the government to declare Wednesday, March 29, the day of the solar eclipse, a holiday for all schools in the country.

They claimed that it was not possible for school children to get to their schools before the eclipse occurred, adding that, it would therefore be proper to declare the day a holiday to prevent any incidents that may occur on that day.

In an interview with the GNA here on Thursday, they said they were happy that they were going to witness this celestial phenomenon, “as it takes several years to occur”.

The pupils stated that they have been sensitised on the event and the preventive measures accorded it. Mr George Gibson Anku, a teacher of the school however, said the price of the solar shades was beyond the reach of school children and the rural folk.

He, therefore, appealed to the authorities to consider reducing the present cost of 10,000 cedis a shade to an affordable price. An elder of the community, Togbe Kwaku Meble, an octogenarian said he witnessed the last eclipse, “I am happy science has improved tremendously for people to know well in advance of such happenings, as most people in the country were not aware of the last eclipse before it happened”.

He appealed to the appropriate agencies to intensify their education before 29th March, when the eclipse would occur. He further appealed to farmers, fishermen and drivers to heed the warning and pieces of advice by the National Planning Committee of the Solar Eclipse.
