Saviour Church members call for government intervention

Achimfo (W/R), Sept. 25, GNA – Members of the Saviour Church at Achimfo in the Aowin-Suaman District in the Western Region, have appealed to the Interior Minister to intervene in the impasse between the Church and the youth of the town, that had been ranging on for more than a year now, to ensure peace and harmony.

Some of the victims, who were injured when the youth attacked them in April 2004, over the rightful ownership of a piece of land were still nursing their injures, while the perpetrators walk freely, they complaint and said it was time the law took its course.

Pastor Emmanuel Fugyabi, head pastor of the Church said 14 houses of some members and Church property worth more than 750 million cedis were destroyed by the youth of the town and about 100 members were forced to flee to seek refuge in Enchi.

When they returned to Achimfo later, they found that their personal property, cocoa and food crops had been stolen and their premises vandalised, and as a result, hardworking members had become destitute, he said, adding that, all efforts to seek justice had proved unsuccessful.

Mr Seth Ohemeng-Amponsah, youth leader of the Church said tents and other items donated to victims by the National Disaster Management Organisation had worn out and they are now exposed to the weather. He said there were indications that, the youth may be preparing another attack on members of the Church and called for immediate intervention to avoid a clash.
