Mr. Benjamin Annan, assembly member for Sanso, near Obuasi, has commended the supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for ensuring a peaceful biometric registration exercise in the township.
Sanso has been noted for violence during political exercises, be it general or assembly elections and has therefore become one of the flash spots in the Obuasi Municipality.
Mr. Annan, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Obuasi, said the Community had met with a resolve to make the registration exercise peaceful and true to their word they all contributed to make the exercise one of the most peaceful in the country.
“There was no challenge from any quarters and when any doubt was raised, agents of the NDC and NPP would resolve it amicably,” he said.
The assembly man said the rate at which Sanso had been associated with political violence was not helpful and that the community was prepared to chart a new life.
“Indeed, Sanso has become one of the places that have recorded peaceful and incident free biometric registration exercise and the people must be praised for that achievement,” Mr. Annan said.
He noted that the roles played by the Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Mr. Matthew Asante, and the Chief of Zongo, Alhaji Ibrahim Gibrine, by way of counselling, had started bearing fruits with this new unity making the registration exercise peaceful.
The assembly member said, if Sanso had been able to complete the biometric registration exercise without any violence, he saw no reason why other registration centres could not go through the exercise in peace.
Mr. Annan, therefore, appealed to Ghanaians to ensure sanity in the registration since violence and provocative language would not help in the growth of Ghana’s democracy.
He again advised politicians not to encourage minors to register because of votes.**
