The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has filed a defamation lawsuit against media personality Afia Schwarzenegger, citing reputational damage caused by her public utterances.
Filed at the High Court in Accra, the suit claims Afia Schwarzenegger made a series of damaging and false statements on social media and other platforms, accusing Mr. Gyamfi of unethical conduct.
At the centre of the suit are claims allegedly made by Afia Schwarzenegger suggesting that Mr. Gyamfi has girlfriends at the University of Ghana, and that he has purchased vehicles and property for them.
The CEO of the Ghana Gold Board contends that the statements were made with malice and calculated to tarnish his public image.
Responding to the allegations, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi firmly dismissed the claims, stating: “I do not have any girlfriend(s) at the University of Ghana, nor have I ever purchased vehicles for any alleged girlfriends as suggested by the defendant.”
He also refuted assertions that he had acquired property in the United States or elsewhere for his wife or an alleged sister-in-law, insisting those claims were entirely fabricated.
Mr. Gyamfi clarified that his wife does not even have a sister named “Vida,” contrary to the defendant’s assertions, adding that any basic inquiry would have exposed the inaccuracy of the claim.
He argued that the defamatory statements were either made with full knowledge of their falsehood or with a reckless disregard for the truth that cannot be excused.
The suit seeks a retraction of the said statements, an unqualified public apology, and general damages of GH₵10 million for the harm caused.
