Saltpond (C/R), Nov. 20, GNA – The Saltpond Redevelopment Institute (SRI), a development-oriented organisation formed to accelerate the development of Saltpond and the Mfantseman District, is to establish an Agriculture University at Kormantse.
A large tract of land had been acquired for the project, which would take off soon after the drawings had been completed. Nana Takyi VII, Kyidomhene of the Nkusukum Traditional Area and Chairman of the Saltpond branch of the Institute, announced this when he led members of the Chicago branch to inspect projects initiated by the organisation and to inspect the land.
Nana Takyi, who is the Chief of Abonko near Mankessim noted that since majority of the people in the District were farmers they would benefit greatly from the institution, which would promote agriculture in the country as a whole.
He commended the Chief of Kormantse, Nana Akyen, for releasing the land to the Institute.
The delegation from the Chicago branch led by Dr. Andrews Agen Davis, a Medical Specialist at the Mercy Hospital in the United States and founder of SRI also inspected pineapple, oil palm and pepper farms and a livestock project established by the Institute.
Dr Davis who is a citizen of Saltpond and the other members from Chicago said they were highly impressed with the work done by their local counterparts and gave the assured them of more support. Earlier at a durbar in honour of the visitors, Okese Essandoh VIII, Omanhene of Nkusukum Traditional Area, commended Dr. Davis for forming the Institute and soliciting for support from friends and donor agencies to develop the town.
The Omanhene appealed to other citizens of the area resident outside to emulate Dr. Davis.
Ms. Dorcas Quarm, a local board member of SRI in charge of health, enumerated the support the Institute had given to the Saltpond Government Hospital and expressed gratitude to the foreign counterparts. Dr. Davis advised the people of Saltpond to be proactive to develop the town, saying they had the resources to better their condition of living and told them not to expect people from elsewhere to do it for them.
SRI has also established a computer training school, built a conference hall and provided a library at Saltpond.
