Sakawa boys caged

The Nsawam magistrate court, presided over by Mrs. Ellen Serwa Mireku, on Tuesday remanded the seven persons suspected to be perpetrators of internet fraud (‘sakawa’) into prison custody for their alleged roles in the murder of a seven-year-old boy, Michael Kwaku Ofosu.

According to information gathered, the boy’s head was chopped off and other parts of the body were severed at Dokrokyewa, a farming community in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region, purportedly for rituals that would make the perpetrators rich.

The suspects are Abdul Aziz, 23, unemployed; Michael Asare, 28, farmer; Ibrahim Amidu, 25, farmer; Kwabena Gadu, 26, farmer; Abdul Karim Wudu, 23, a driver’s mate; Kwaku Aminu, 20, farmer and Evans Sarfo, 28, a labourer.

The chief prosecutor, Lawrence Ackah, told the court that the police were still investigating the matter, therefore the suspects should be remanded for one week to enable the police conclude their investigation. The suspects were charged for murder and remanded into custody to reappear on 26 May, 2015 for trial.

The seven suspected sakawa boys were arrested by the Nsawam police last Saturday in a swoop, after one of the suspects assisting in investigations stormed the police station to report that a dead body had been dumped on his farm.

While leading the police to the farm where the body was discovered, the suspect/informant, Michael Asare, told the officers that he suspected certain persons as being behind the murder and proceeded to mention the names of those people, who were eventually arrested.

Deceased Family Reactions

Father of the deceased, Enock Kwasi Ofosu and the Dokrokyewa chief, Baffour Opoku Agyemang, as well as the other community members who were at the court, hooted at the suspects when they were being conveyed in a bus to prison custody.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Enock Ofosu, who recently lost her wife, said the deceased son was schooling at the Dokrokyewa Presby School.

Baffour Opoku Agyemang hinted that his outfit had gathered that the suspects had been engaging in lots of criminal activities in the village, and said justice must be done without delay.
