Runaway prison inmate remanded

Kwesi Anor, a 44-year-old trader, has been remanded into prison custody by a Tarkwa circuit court for unlawfully escaping from prison custody at Hiawa.

He pleaded not guilty and will re-appear on December 12.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court, presided by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante, that at about 0630 hours on November 6 the complainant, Lance Corporal Alex Vidzro, a prison officer stationed at Hiawa prison camp, near Manso-Amenfi, was detailed to escort the accused who had been sentenced to three years imprisonment for fraud, and three other inmates to perform external labour at Hiawa.

He said at about 01130 hours when they completed the work, the accused sneaked unnoticed into the bush removed his attire, ran away and all efforts to trace him failed.

Chief Inspector Amponsah said the complainant made a formal report and a search party found the accused that same day at around 1930 hours at Adamanso, a farming community, and was re-arrested.
