Ghana’s international relations with America is likely to face a standstill following the declaration of the stay of the Gitmo duo in Ghana illegal by the supreme court.
This is according to a leading member of the foreign affairs committee of parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The decision by government in the erstwhile Mahama administration to accommodate the ex-detainees from Guantanamo bay has generated a lot of heat in the country as some concerned citizens fear the security of the country could be compromised.
This uproar saw the then president, John Mahama, hold an emergency press briefing stating in clear language that the two persons are under an eagle eye with security officials monitoring their every steps hence the need to not be disturbed.
But it seems the explanation by the NDC government did not sit down well with some Ghanaian complainants who filed a case to the Supreme Court over the matter.
This controversial case was then ruled in their favour by the Supreme court.
It is against this backdrop that Samuel Okudzetu Ablakwa has warned that the bilateral relations between both countries has the likelihood of been destroyed thus calling for the need for government to be circumspect and we need to make sure that we do not jeopardize our relationship with the United States of America.
Meanwhile, the American government is yet to comment on the ruling by the Supreme Court as issues of a redress is most likely to be considered.
