Robbers strike at Mallam Market

Women who sell at Mallam Market in the Ga South Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region have bemoaned the increasing rate of armed robbery cases in the market and its adjoining towns.

Consequently, the worried women called on the central government to construct police posts at strategic positions within the community to help curtail the alarming rate of robbery cases.

According to them, the fear of being attacked by robbers is not only creating insecurity and panic amongst market women but residents in the Ga South Municipality.

This revelation came to the fore when officials of the Ghana Aids Commission and Swaa Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO,) stormed the Mallam market to educate woman on the use of female condoms and protection from STDs and HIV.

In an interview with Today, the Coordinator of Ghana Aids Commission, Madam Joan, recounted an attack by a gang of armed robbers at Mallam market recently where the robbers broke into the market and made away with some valuable items.

“…and terrified by the sporadic shooting by the armed robbers many of the market folks ran helter-skelter for their lives… some of them repeatedly called police stations to complain about the incident,” a market woman, Cecilia Aku Mensah, disclosed.

Against this backdrop, she appealed to the police to act with dispatch to restore sanity in the community, and also called on them [the police] to intensify patrols in Ga South.

That, she said, will not only help restore peace and order in Ga South municipality but also encourage the business community to work without fear of being robbed or attacked by armed robbers.

Mrs. Mensah also seized the opportunity to make a passionate appeal to government to construct a public toilet facility at the market.
