Road safety committee formed in Ahanta West

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in the Western Region has formed a road safety committee in the Ahanta West District to champion a campaign towards the reduction of road crashes in the district. The committee is made up of representatives from the Assembly’s committees, including the Social Services Sub-committee, Justice and Security Sub-committee, as well as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the City Guard Unit.

The rest are the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ Ladies Association, the National Ambulance Service and the Ghana National Fire Service.

The Presiding Member of the Ahanta West, Mr. Emmanuel Okumi-Andoh, inaugurated the Committee at Agona-Nkwanta on Tuesday and appealed to members to identify local factors that caused road crashes and come up with interventions to reduce carnage in the area.

He advised them to engage the chiefs and opinion leaders in the district to support them in their educational drive and enforcement of road safety laws in the district.

The Western Regional Manager of the NRCS, Alhaji Sumani Mbo, commended the Assembly for demonstrating its commitment towards road safety issues by showing positive response towards the government’s call for all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to partner the NRSC and other stakeholders in the road sector to reduce carnage on the road.

He said although education on road safety had increased in the district, it continued to record high cases of road traffic crashes and stressed that road safety required collective responsibility of all the citizenry to combat it.
